Baptists Host Conferences On Christianity And Marriage Equality
By Believe Out Loud
This month, on February 25, The Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists (AWAB), The Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America and The Alliance of Baptists will begin its “Many Voices, One Love” campaign by hosting the first of three LGBT marriage equality conferences throughout the country.
The first conference will take place in North Carolina and focus on defeating Amendment One, a discriminatory constitutional amendment that North Carolinians will be voting on May 8, 2012. The next two conferences will take place in New York City and Florida (stay tuned for exact dates). The New York City conference will focus on the intersection of sexuality, race, and marriage equality in the church, and the Florida conference will focus on opening up dialogue on marriage equality.
“The idea of Many Voices, One Love reminds us that there are many voices speaking to faith, sexuality and gender, each grounded in their local experience and needs,” said Rev. Robin Lunn, Executive Director of AWAB. “We particularly want to affirm that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people deserve the same freedoms and responsibilities when it comes to sacred covenants that straight people do.”
This election year is certain to be an exciting and critical time for the advancement of LGBT equality throughout the country. These events will help LGBT-inclusive Christians and their allies to work toward greater equality in their churches and communities.
All are welcome and encouraged to bring their passion, knowledge, skills and voice to these important gatherings.
