Northfield Minister Advocates For Marriage Equality In Minnesota

As Minnesotans we will soon be voting on the proposed marriage amendment. I’ve been thinking about how my mind has changed, because of my faith.

I grew up in a small town in northwest Iowa. I attended our town’s United Church of Christ weekly and took my faith very seriously. Homosexuality was not a topic we discussed openly in my family or in my church. But not surprisingly, I internalized the notion that being a Christian meant that you were against homosexuality because the Bible said it was wrong.

In college, a friend of mine invited me to attend worship at the United Church of Christ she was attending. I had never visited a church like this. The pastor was deeply spiritual, very effective, and he was openly gay. I didn’t know that was possible. There were same gender couples in the congregation, and some were raising children. The same gender couples were friends with the opposite gender couples and their children all played together after worship. No one was afraid. I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit in that church in a powerful new way.
