Nordstrom Comes Out Supporting Marriage Equality

Last week, Nordstrom sent an email to over 56,000 employees supporting marriage equality. The Seattle-based company stands behind ballot initiative Referendum 74 that would make same sex marriage legal in the state.

In the email, Blake, Pete, and Erik Nordstrom spoke about their approach to business being inclusive for all workers and customers. Nordstrom has been an ally of the LGBTQ community since the 1990s. “In 1998, we began offering life partner benefits to employees,” the business leaders said in their email.

With a company that has annual sales of $10.5 billion, and serves customers through Nordstrom stores, Nordstrom.com, Nordstrom Rack and HauteLook, Referendum 74 gains a valuable partner in getting it passed.

“We gave this thoughtful consideration and felt the time was right to come out in support of this civil rights issue. It is our belief that our gay and lesbian employees are entitled to the same rights and protections marriage provides under the law as all other employees.”
