Christian Leaders Conflicted on Uganda’s ‘Kill the Gays’ Bill

Christian leaders seem to be smack dab in the middle of the debate surrounding Uganda’s “Kill the Gays” bill. Scott Lively, the President of Abiding Truth Ministries, is taking a majority of the credit for the successful progress of this bill. Lively met with Ugandan government officials in 2009 to denounce homosexuality abroad. He stands behind his beliefs, saying the pubic promotion of homosexuality should be punished with criminal charges and potentially death. 

Bryan Fisher of the American Family Association loudly supports Lively’s efforts on his Twitter feed: “Homosexuality now against the law in Uganda, just as it was for 200 years in the US. It can be done”.

There has been some significant push back from other Christian leaders. Pastor Joseph Tolton, the Elder of the Rehoboth Temple Christ Conscious Church, created the Hope in Uganda campaign which gathered signatures from African American faith leaders to eliminate the “Kill the Gays” bill from the agenda. Additionally, All Out created a campaign to also gather signatures. They currently have nearly 200,000 and are hoping for at least 50,000 more. 

The passion behind both sides of the Uganda anti-gay bill has reached its peak in the last couple of weeks. A passion, which no doubt, has more room to grow.
